Background: Director Ron Hamad was hired to shoot a series of branding campaign spots for Parkview Health. I was referred to Ron by Rufus Burnham of The Camera House. Ron pitched me to the client, they liked my reel and off I was for a 10-day commercial in the Midwest. A few months later we were hired to shoot another two spots that are proving to be a very successful campaign for the Fort Wayne region.
Cinematic Treatment: One of the reasons for Ron's success in the healthcare commercial world is his approach to casting and directing "real" people. Ron is a very visual director and will inspire me with a lot of photographic references for his vision.
I spend a great deal of effort with Ron ensuring we have the right locations. Ron appreciates this, and will always try to get me on board for pre-production as early as possible. As a DP my greatest responsibility is to ensure I am executing my director's original vision.
Having come up through the camera ranks, I am very thorough with my equipment. It is very seldom I will request a piece of equipment if I don't really need it.
I used KODAK VISION2 200T Color Negative 5217 Film for the series of spots in August, and KODAK VISION2 250D Color Negative Film for the final two spots in December.
My camera package included an Arri 435, Zeiss Ultra Primes, Angenieux Optima 17-80mm 2.1T, Angenieux Optima 24-290mm 2.8T, and a Nikkor 400mm 2.8T.
Because we were using real people, we wanted to heighten the natural moments once we captured them. As a result we shot all the spots at a slow shutter speed. 30 FPS for the wide shots, 40 FPS for the medium shots, and 60 FPS for the closeups. For the water splashing and helicopter shots, we shot at 90 FPS.
