Product: ALLSPORT "What's Your Sport?"
Cinematic Treatment: Michael showed me a Gatorade spot as a reference for the saturated green tones, highly stylized bright white and dark shadow look he was after. I lit this in a very dramatic, moody way for a commercial. I used atmospheric smoke to augment the desired shafts of dramatic light we were after.
To ensure the whites had a blown-out feel I exposed them at Zone 10, and made sure every frame had a white highlight in it. A lot of the art direction was chrome silver, so it was easy enough to ensure each shot had a white highlight. Conversely, I used large 12x12 black solids on the opposite side of the key light as negative fill, to ensure the images contained both white highlights all the way down to pure black shadows, at Zone 1.
The spot was shot in a large warehouse. I used Kodak 5246 - 250 daylight film with HMI lights, as I needed a lot of exposure to shoot high frame rates with a very narrow shutter. Our frame rates varied between 36, 48, 90, and 120 FPS, while we shot with a very narrow, 15% shutter.
For the shots of the falling sweat droplets, shot at a 15% shutter and 120 FPS, we had a 5 and a 1/2 stop exposure compensation loss. I had to light these scenes up to a T stop of 11.5 to accommodate our wide open T2.0 Zeiss Ultra Prime shooting stop.
We used a Fisher 10 to do a circular 180-degree dolly track for one dynamic wrap around shot, while the opening shot was executed on a 14mm Ultra Prime at 30 FPS, on a 30-foot straight track. We shot the spot in 10 hour day.
